Parallel thread rebar couplers — technical guide and specifications

What Is a Parallel Thread Coupler?

A parallel thread coupler is a mechanical rebar splice consisting of a precision-machined steel sleeve with a constant-diameter (parallel) internal thread. Both reinforcing bar ends are rolled with a matching parallel external thread and connected by screwing them into the sleeve from opposite ends until they meet at the centre.

The result is a compact, highly efficient connection that transfers the full tensile and compressive force of the bar without any overlap zone, rebar wastage, or bar congestion.

Why Parallel Thread vs Taper Thread?

Parallel thread couplers use a constant-diameter profile across the full thread length. Unlike taper thread systems, parallel threads distribute load uniformly across all thread flanks rather than concentrating stress at the thread tip — resulting in more consistent tensile performance and less sensitivity to installation torque variation.

Technical Specifications

  • Bar sizes: 16mm, 20mm, 25mm, 28mm, 32mm, 36mm, 40mm (T16–T40)
  • Sleeve material: Grade 45 steel, machined to ISO 965-1 thread tolerance
  • Surface treatment: Black phosphate or hot-dip galvanised (for corrosive environments)
  • Tensile capacity: ≥125% of the bar’s specified yield strength (ACI 318-19 Type 2)
  • Thread engagement: Minimum 1.0 × sleeve half-length per side
  • Thread profile: Constant pitch, parallel (non-tapered), ISO metric or UNF depending on project standard

Pre-Assembly Options

BestNotch parallel thread couplers can be supplied in three configurations:

  • Standard (on-site assembly): Threaded bars and loose sleeves delivered separately. Both bar ends threaded on-site before placing rebar cage.
  • Half-threaded (positional): One bar end fully threaded and one end smooth. Used where one bar is already cast and only one end needs mechanical connection.
  • Pre-assembled couplets: Bar lengths supplied with sleeves pre-engaged to one end in the factory. Reduces on-site threading requirements significantly.

International Standards Compliance

BestNotch parallel thread couplers are tested and certified to ACI 318-19 (Type 2 seismic splice), BS 8110, Eurocode 2 (EN 1992), ISO 15630-1, and UAE / Dubai Municipality structural codes. Full batch testing certificates, thread gauge calibration records, and mill test reports are provided with every order.
